Top Tips for Preparing for a New Pet

Scott · January 14, 2022 · Leave a Comment

Pets will instantly become part of the family, and they will bring a lot of joy to any household. They make excellent companions and can bring comfort when you need it the most. However, it is important to make sure that you are able and willing to take on the responsibility of caring for an animal before you welcome them into your home. That includes preparing your living space, amongst other things, for their arrival. Here are a few tips on how you can prepare for your new pet properly.

Register Them with a Vet

If you can register your pet with a local vet before you bring them home, do so, but otherwise, do this as soon as you can once you have. If you’re buying your pet from a breeder, they may have already had their vaccinations and general health check, but it’s always a good idea to take your pet in yourself for peace of mind. If you want to see a good example of a vet clinic, ortinganimalhospital.com is the kind of quality practice you should be looking for. Ask other pet owners you might know in the area for their recommendations as well.

Do Your Research

Another important thing to do is more research into the breed of animal that you’re bringing home. You might be surprised to discover things you didn’t know, such as what foods or plants are toxic to your new pet, behavioral patterns, dietary requirements, and so on. The more you learn about your new animal companion, the better, as this will help you to keep them happy and safe.

Create a Quiet Space for Them

You might have a pet that will be spending most of its time in a tank or cage anyway, but for animals that will be roaming your house, like cats and dogs, you should find a quiet spot in the house that they can claim as theirs. They will likely be a little overwhelmed at first, so having a more calming area to sit in will help them feel safe. It can also help them if they want to spend some time sleeping away from the other members of your household. Put their bed, food bowls, and some toys in this area.

Deep Clean the House

Freeing your house from clutter is not only good for you, but it will help to create a better living environment for your pet too. Make sure that there is nothing your pets can get into, break, eat, or hurt themselves on before they arrive. If you can have your carpets cleaned to get rid of any bacteria or stubborn dirt before they come home, this could be beneficial as well. You should also think about your household cleaning products and whether they are animal-friendly. There are plenty of brands that are designed to be non-toxic for pets, so either switch to them or make sure that your pet can get to any surfaces immediately after cleaning and that these products are stored securely somewhere your pet can’t reach.

If you’re getting ready to bring a pet home soon, use these tips to prepare for their arrival properly.
