No one realizes quite how difficult marriage can be until they say, “I do”. When you notice that your marriage isn’t quite as passionate and happy as it used to be, that’s normal. However, you need to act quickly. Here are some tips to help you in your struggling marriage.
1. Talk about it
It can be difficult to bring up negative feelings, but you have to talk about it. When you do, be as calm as possible. Since it’s a sensitive topic, it’s easy to get emotional and start arguing. When this happens, no one gets anywhere. In fact, being angry or nagging will only push your partner further away. If you are having trouble communicating in a healthy way, try talking to a counselor to help you speak to each other in a better way.
2. Forgive
This does not mean that you should be a doorman! This also doesn’t mean there aren’t consequences for a person’s actions. However, marriage is forever. If your partner betrayed you by being unfaithful, it could be easy to end the relationship right then and there. Take the time to work on it, after your partner gets tested, of course.
3. Focus on yourself
When a marriage struggles, many people lose themselves in that struggle. Don’t let that happen to you. Focus on your career, your health goals, your family, and your hobbies. When you emphasize your own needs, it prevents you from letting yourself go professionally and in your appearance.
4. Be a team
As a couple, you need to support each other. This applies even when you don’t necessarily agree. Work out a system where both of you can learn to make decisions together without turning it into an argument. You can take turns making decisions, find a way to compromise effectively, or just give in every now and then. Remember to ask yourself if the problem is really worth the fight. In many cases, it isn’t.
5. Spend alone time together
Whether sex is one of the positive aspects of your marriage or an area that requires more work, spending time together in bed is a great way to get closer. Don’t just plan on having sex, though. Take the time to look your best. Put on sexy lingerie, get your hair and nails done, and, if you’re the adventurous type, even look for some new and exciting things to try. At the very least, you’ll get some good sex out of it.
6. Look at the good
Why did you marry your spouse in the first place? Focus on the good times and the things you love about your spouse. Once you have a firm grasp on how much you love them and why, you should express that to them! Act appreciative and happy with everything they do and remind them how much you love them with small actions of affection.
