The movie stars Kevin Spacey as a MIT math professor, Mickey Rosa, who will train a group of mathematically gifted students to do card counting at the games of blackjack in casinos, everything in order to fleece the casino. The movie is based on a true story. In the 1980’s the MIT group of students really did this. They trained for hours to perfect their card counting. They had a series of strategies to increase the chances of a winning hand, and also to defy the security systems of the casino, like avoiding to get caught.
The MIT blackjack team made a lot in their first weekend and they became so well known in the US that they had to play abroad. Over the years the MIT blackjack group evolved and recruited more members.
The first person who proved that card counting works was an actual MIT math professor, Eduard O. Thorp. He used an IBM computer to analyse the probabilities of blackjack and when he was ready to test the theory, he went on a road trip to casinos. The first weekend proved that the theory worked. Instead of continuing the new line of work, he decided to write “Beat the Dealer” (1996) book instead.
