In order to have the best life we can, there needs to be a good balance of work and personal time. Too much of one to the detriment of the other can cause problems including relationship issues and financial ones. However, the ideal balance can be hard to find, and it is usually work that sees most of our time spent on it, leaving little left for our family, friends, or personal enjoyment. This is why, if this is the case for you, you will need to work on improving your work-life balance. Here is how to go about it.
Set Time Limits
One of the best ways to ensure you have a good work-life balance is to set time limits on the number of hours that you work. Although there will be times when this can’t always be stuck to – late-running meetings and urgent emails, for example – try to work within those set hours as much as possible. This way, you won’t be in ‘work mode’ all day every day, and you will be more able to spend time doing other things.
During this time away from work, make sure that you are away from your emails, your laptop, your work social media accounts, and so on. If you can still access them even when you are meant to be off work, you could be tempted to, and that will distract you from your downtime.
This is the time you can use to schedule in days out with your family, or evenings out with friends, for example. Just as you might not want anything to distract you during your working hours, make sure nothing can pull you away from your relaxation hours too.
Delegate More
Delegation is something that everyone needs to learn how to do more of. If you can use your time more efficiently, then you will have a better work-life balance to enjoy as a result. Learning how to delegate can be difficult; it’s hard to let go and ‘lose control’ of a task, but it is often for the best. If, for example, your skills in a particular area are lacking, delegating that task to someone who can do it better will allow you to work on other areas, and for the job to be done to a higher standard.
If there is no one on your team to delegate the work to, think about outsourcing. Finding an excellent accountant or marketer will give you more time to unwind and de-stress at the end of the day. Similarly, ensure you are using the latest tools that will be of benefit to your business, whether this be helpful apps, software, or design tools. For those working in the engineering sector developing products, then invest in the latest design tools that can aid in the creation of PCBs, such as CircuitStudio by Altium so that you can run your business as efficiently as possible.
Don’t Multi-Task
Multi-tasking is often hailed as something that we should all do – it makes us more productive and gets more done so that we can save time. The truth is that it is the opposite; multi-tasking makes us a lot less productive, even if we think we’re getting more done.
The human brain can only work on one thing at a time if it is to get its full attention. When you are working on lots of things, nothing is getting your full attention, so although you might get it all finished, it will take longer, and the standard won’t be as high as if you worked on one thing at a time. Stop multi-tasking and work in order of priority instead.
