Dry eye syndrome is a common condition that occurs when tears aren’t enough to lubricate the eyes. Tears are either inadequate or considered poor quality, and they can lead to inflammation and damage to the eye’s surface. Typically, dry eyes are quite uncomfortable as they can sting or burn.

People with dry eye syndrome suffer from light sensitivity, have difficulty putting on their contacts, and may have stringy mucus around their eyes. They also have difficulty driving at night and may experience blurred vision. Those with dry eyes must consult with their eye specialist to ensure that they manage their condition properly. Several surgical and non-surgical options are available to relieve the symptoms of dry eyes. One popular non-invasive procedure is IPL for dry eyes, which uses pulses of intense light therapy and combined with a Meibomian gland expression that clears out the glands to hasten healing.

Here are other ways to manage dry eye syndrome symptoms.

Take frequent screen breaks

One of the primary causes of dry eyes is too much screen time. Whether it’s because of work or because of streaming flicks, you must take time to rest from staring too much at screens. The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends the 20-20-20 rule. This requires at least 20 seconds every 20 minutes staring at objects at least 20 feet away.

Apply warm compress

If you want to relieve some dry eye symptoms, it will be best to use a warm compress. A moist and warm compress will stimulate the eyes to produce more lipids that can boost tear quality. You can buy a medical-grade eye compress or use a clean towel to place over the eyes for five minutes. Then, gently massage the compress over your eyes to help tear production.

The trick to use a warm compress is finding the right temperature balance. It shouldn’t be too hot to cause injury but warm enough to be therapeutic.

Wash eyelids properly

Consult an eye specialist to find out which solution you can use to wash your eyelids. Several products are available in the market, or you can also use a warm washcloth dipped in a solution of water and a little non-irritating shampoo. Gently rub and clean the eyelid to remove dirt and grime that accumulate under the eyelids.

Use a humidifier

Since your eyes are easily dried out, increase the amount of moisture in the immediate vicinity. Use a humidifier to add moisture to dry indoor air and help keep your eyes moist. The humidifiers will also help purify the air as they can remove particulates that can irritate your eyes.

Wear glasses

If you wish to manage dry eye properly, you can wear eyeglasses. Whether prescription or not, what’s important is these can block dry air and wind and prevent your eyes from drying out too quickly.

Conclusions

You can easily manage dry eye symptoms by adjusting and adapting to a few things around them.
